Anybody with a brain knew this was never going to work and Tesla was obviously lying about the 2 million reservations (okay not lying, omitting some 'small' details - like that the reservations were meaningless, much like their 'Robotaxi' is public, where by public they mean an app that lets you join a waitlist...).
Electreck article though is suggesting xAI / SpaceX are buying them not only to help Tesla, but the timing suggested that it was also to extract as much of subsides as possible. As this is a significant transaction between releated entities, there should be some documentation on that in quarterly financial statements. Quite curious how many they bought - based on Tesla influencers posts, at least for SpaceX it looks like a lot:
Part of it has to do with how distinctive it is. And how distinctive the CEO’s antics have become. It seems the one has become a symbol for the other.
One passed me on the street a month ago and every single person raised an eyebrow, even the girls who went to church with the driver and said hi to him looked mildly apologetic as though they didn’t really want to be associated with any of it, but were too polite to say so.
I’d be surprised if sales ever recovered. Then again I was surprised the board approved a trillion dollar pay package for the guy. Maybe people think he still has a Midas touch despite the backlash.
I've never been in one, but the design really looks challenging. I'm not sure it could beat the functionality of a standard "truck" and as a vehicle for "show" there be better options with more resale value out there.
It's basically a Model 3 drivetrain with a weird funny heavy gauge stainless body on it.
I bet it kicks ass if you need a presentable daily but also tend to do a lot of stuff that tends to beat the crap out of a conventional car body. But how many people need that? Not many.
I agree with whatever fashion writer said the design would go hard if it were the size of like an og fiat 500 or a geo metro. As realized though it just Smacks of Gender.

> “the design looks challenging”
That’s a hilarious way to put it
