Did 'bean mouth' kill Pixar's Elio at the box office?

Cultural critics deplore the trend towards derivative sequels or prequals ,but considering how movies based on original storylines not uncommonly bomb, it's understandable why studios gravitate to the safety and reliability of franchises.
